THE RUSSIAN POSITIONS WERE 5 MILES AWAY. A muddy path cut through the unharvested sunflowers, across the damp, beige landscape and into a tall hedge about 400 yards ahead of us. From a distance, it wasn’t clear what we were heading towards. As we got closer, however, there were signs of life—the detritus from weeks of living on the edge was all around. Then I heard the voices of members of the 40th Artillery Brigade below us and saw a filthy staircase that led underground, into a six foot deep bunker ahead. Once we were inside, I saw the roof was made up of tree trunks covered in thick soil, so as to remain camouflaged from enemy drones.
